Cloudberries, rubus chamaemorus, is also known as the gold of the plateau. Ever since ancient times, the cloudberry has been considered the finest of wild berries. Even though the plant is very common north of the polar circle, it doesn’t bear fruit very often outside of Scandinavia.

Containing a staggering amount of vitamin C, 3-4 times as much as an orange, the cloudberry can also boast of containing so much benzoic acid it is almost self-preserving. Scurvy was traditionally treated with cloudberries, sailors bringing entire barrels’ worth of cloudberries with them on their voyage. This is well-documented in Arabic writings which describe Norwegian sailors carrying cloudberries on their ships.

Rubus chamaemorus decoction was sometimes used to treat coughs, fevers, and tuberculosis.

Freya was a very important for the norse mythology and her name comes up a lot in written works, some of which are Gylfaginning, Thrymskvida, and Lokasenna. It was exactly because of her popularity Christendom despised the fertile Freya, and Christian missionaries actively tried to stop her worship.
