Description
Our Norse crowberry soap has a refreshing smell and will quickly become one of your favorites.

Olive-, coconut-, and almond oils, shea- and cocoa butter, crowberries from Vesterålen, essential oils from green mint, Ylang-Ylang, pigmentation, and rosemary extract.

The shiny black crowberry, or empetrum nigrum, contains ample amounts of fluids, and used to be an important source of nutrition. The berry grows all over the Faeroe islands, where the king Sverre Sigurdsson grew up. In 1186, Sverre challenged German merchants visiting Bergen to make crowberry wine, to replace imported ones. Because wine made from grapes was so expensive, Norwegian priests requested permission from the Pope to use crowberries for their altar wine instead of grapes, but the Pope refused them.

The Eskimos of Greenland stored crowberries for the winter, frozen alongside other plants like mountain sorrel and garden angelica. The berry’s juice was well suited for use in lemonades, wine, and gelatin desserts. Comfortable in colder environments, the finest crowberries can be found here, in the north.

Crowberries are usually forage during autumn, but because they are self-preserving some can be foraged as the snow melts during spring. This is due to their high antioxidant contents and organic acids, which slows the growth of bacteria and fungi. Supposedly, the berries help with snowblindness, colic, various respiratory issues like coughs, hoarseness, bronchitis and slime, and are also diuretic and laxative. A large amount of flavonoids can also be found in these berries, which are beneficial antioxidants for capillary veins and also help cleanse the body’s veins.

The traditional Norwegian dessert, treak, was sometimes made with crowberries. Their juices were squeezed out and mixed with sugar, then boiled to a thick, sticky substance. Crowberry treak was a tasty treat for special occasions.

This soap is named after Loke, the greatest trickster of Norse mythology. Loke was the son of a jötunn and an Æsir, and fathered many monsters with the jötunn Angerboda; Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel (the ruler of the underworld). Loke is also a shapeshifter, an ability which let him become the mother of Odin’s horse, Sleipnir, by breeding with the stallion Svadilfare. He secretly helps the gods against the destructive powers of the jötunn, and saves them from many crises. To begin with, at least. Later on, he becomes resentful towards the gods for looking down on his jötunn heritage, and decides to oppose them.
